Why Do Students Become SUP Leaders?
Why Do Students Become SUP Leaders?
Student voice sits at the heart of The Stand-Up Project.
Recently, a Grade 6 student was asked why they chose to volunteer as a SUP Leader. Their response was honest, thoughtful and deeply moving.
They wrote about wanting to become someone other students could trust. Someone other students could talk to. Someone who understood that bullying does not always show on the outside, but can still hurt deeply on the inside.
That is the kind of leadership The Stand-Up Project aims to grow.
Not leadership based on being the loudest person in the room, but leadership grounded in empathy, experience and responsibility.
When young people are given the opportunity to lead, they often bring a level of insight that adults can miss. They know what it feels like to be excluded, judged or misunderstood. They also know how powerful it can be when another student notices, listens and stands beside them.
This student’s words are a reminder of why student-led bullying prevention matters.
Because when students use their own experiences to support others, school becomes safer, kinder and more connected.
